Founded in 1941, the Santa Barbara Museum of Art is one of the nation's outstanding regional art museums. The museum's permanent collection includes 19th century French, British and American works of art; 20th century and contemporary European, North American and Latin American art; Asian art; classical antiquities; and photography, prints and drawings. A children's interactive gallery is also a highlight.

More than 150,000 visitors come out each year to the natural history museum which houses 11 exhibition halls focusing on regional natural history-birds, insects, mammals, marine life-and on the residents who inhabited the area, the Chumash Indians. The museum features the largest collection of Chumash artifacts outside the Smithsonian; its shell and bird egg collections are also among the most significant in the country. A lizard lounge featuring live reptiles and amphibians and a planetarium, historic natural history art gallery, museum store and life-size Blue Whale skeleton are other outstanding attractions.

Consistently ranked as one of America's best small zoos, the Santa Barbara Zoological Gardens features 600 animals including elephants, giraffes, lions, tigers, gibbons, sea lions, exotic birds and farm animals. The zoo's first lion cub, Kiki, was born in the 'Cats of Africa' exhibit earlier this year and the Asian Elephant exhibit opened in the summer of 2004.
Artamo Gallery (5-minute drive)
Located in downtown Santa Barbara this art gallery features contemporary art by national and regional artists. Dynamic pieces include paintings, prints, sculpture and ceramics, photography, and collage. The Artamo Gallery brings the Santa Barbara cultural arts about six to eight solo exhibitions each year along with rotating group shows.
